BEFORE THE FIRST LECTURE
a) "Best" piece of creative work before coming to this course
This video is a short excerpt from my Visual Arts major in HSC. I had submitted a collection of work as my final product, featuring a range of abstract works and expressive forms such as mixed media, sculpture, textile work, and videography. My oeuvre aimed to encapsulate my profound interest in the tangibility of 'self' and 'personality', investigating the infinite selves and alternative identities which exist within each being. Each component of my major work explored the relationship between one's physical world and their understanding of themselves, and how external experiences can inherently shape and influence one's personal dealings.
b) an image of a great piece of architecture
The architecture I have chosen is the Borobudur temple, Indonesia. This incredible site is particularly fascinating to me, not only because of its rich cultural influence but also due to the meticulous detail, skill and craftsmanship behind the architecture. Influenced by both my interest in Ancient History as well as my Indonesian cultural background, I am deeply intrigued by the grandeur of ancient sites and architectures such as Borobudur, in relation to its time. Despite technological and methodic limitations, the architects of the ancient world did not fail to provide us with an array of inspirational and iconic constructions, which continue to play a prominent role in contemporary society. Borobudur, along with many other ancient sites–such as the Parthenon, Pompeii and Herculaneum and Machu Picchu– both demonstrates and emphasise the timeless values of detail, precision, and aestheticism in the physical world. Ancient sites also shape our understanding of the relationship between the discipline of Architecture with the religious, political, social, economical and cultural beliefs and experiences of a society, and demonstrates how monumental sites can inherently bridge the past, present and future. I have chosen Borobudur as it has personally provided me with insight and knowledge into my own cultural history, allowing me to deepen my appreciation for Architecture.
c) an original photograph of something beautiful
I have photographed this corral because I find the rawness of its form and texture quite beautiful. This natural creature/object was made without any deliberate intention and has been heavily and perfectly manipulated by its environment and circumstances. While the smooth and polished end-products of many manufactured goods are quite aesthetically pleasing, I find that the dimpled and discoloured surface and rough edges of the coral is much more valuable, as each mark represents what the coral had endured while in the sea.
In the same way, my interpretation of 'beauty' is synonymous with 'experience'. The beauty of humans, architectures and many other physical things are inextricably dependent upon many other factors, such as its personal, social and global influences and its place and interaction and with the world around them. This coral, for example, would have possessed an entirely different sense of 'beauty', had I photographed it while it was alive in the ocean, as beauty is relative to time and location.
